What happened during Loki’s Season 2 Episode 3 “1893?”

The episode begins with the missing Ravonna Renslayer meeting Miss Minutes in a poor, rural area of Chicago 1868. Renslayer has a package that Miss Minutes tells her she needs to give to a very important person. If she does this, she will rule by He Who Remains side when he returns to the TVA one day. Renslayer throws the package in the window of a little boy who is experimenting with test tubes, and the package is revealed to be the TVA guide book, which was written by Ouroboros.

***End of Cold Open***

Back at the TVA, Ouroboros, Loki and, Mobius are trying to figure out how to override the system. They decide that tracking down Renslayer is their best bet and go to where she was last seen: Chicago 1868 and Chicago 1893. The latter turns out to be the World’s Fair. They tour the inventions before seeing a sign for “Victor Timely’s Temporal Marvels,” and head inside the tent for a demonstration.

You hear the voice of He Who Remains speak about how time is the future of power in front of a device that looks like the Time Loom. The light shines on the figure, and we realize that the speaker, Victor Timely, is a Variant of He Who Remains who received the TVA guide as a child 25 years before. Despite his inventions, Victor is a more timid and awkward variant who would have never become this successful without the TVA guide.

Renslayer explains to Victor how He Who Remains created the Sacred Timeline and with her help, he can become great. It seems that Miss Minutes and Renslayer want to mold him into a Variant that could become as powerful as He Who Remains to restore the status quo.

They go to retrieve his latest invention before heading back to the TVA, and Victor ditches Renslayer. “She wanted a partnership,” Miss Minutes says to justify the action — clearly playing to Victor’s ego.

Renslayer, Mobius, and Loki arrive for a stand down, and Slyvie pops in to kill Victor. He pleads with her that he is not the man she thinks he is, and he’s capable of making his own choices. Through tears, she realizes that this possibility is exactly what she’s been fighting for, and she lets him go with Mobius and Loki back to the TVA.

Slyvie then gives Renslayer what she always wanted: a seat at the end of time. She kicks her through a time door to the crumbling end of time. She pulls up Miss Minutes and they stare at the decaying body of He Who Remains, still in his chair from when Slyvie stabbed him.

Miss Minutes says that Victor was foolish to make an enemy of someone who knows all his secrets. She then points to Renslayer and says, “I could tell you about yourself, but it will make you real angry,” before the credits roll.

What does Miss Minutes know? We will have to stay tuned until next Thursday to find out!
