The New Hocus Pocus 2 Teaser Trailer Just Dropped — Here’s Everything We Know So Far
September 30 can’t come fast enough!
Disney released the first teaser trailer for the much-anticipated Hocus Pocus 2 on June 28, and we haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. So while we wait for the movie to premiere on Disney+, here’s a look at everything we know about the movie so far.
The Sanderson Sisters are Back
The OG Sandersons, Winnifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy), are back in Salem after 29 years. Since the original Hocus Pocus film premiered in 1993, this sequel will be set in present day 2022.
If you don’t remember, Max Dennison lit the Black Flame Candle in 1993, which brought the sisters back. Then he, his sister Dani, his crush Allison, and a cat who was a 1693-teen named Thackery Binx defeat the sisters. When the sun rises, Winnifred is turned to stone while Sarah and Mary just disintegrate. However, Max and gang did not destroy the Sandersons’ spell book, which is what can bring them back to life.
In the trailer, we see the book’s eye open as two girls (who we presume are the new Max and Allison) speak a spell. The Black Flame Candle lights and next thing you know Winnifred is yelling “lock up your children! Yes, Salem, we’re back!”
There Are Lots of New Faces
Considering that it’s been 29 years, we couldn’t have the same protagonists in this movie. Instead of Max, Dani, and Allison, Hocus Pocus 2 will follow three high school students — Becca (Whitney Peak), Izzy (Belissa Escobedo), and Cassie (Lilia Buckingham) — who accidentally bring the Sanderson sisters back.
The movie will also star Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Sam Richardson (Veep), but in what capacity, we’re not sure. Richardson makes an appearance in the trailer telling Becca that a witch can get her powers on her 16th birthday.
We May Seem Some Old Faces
According to Disney, Doug Jones, who played Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, will be returning for the sequel. Whether that’s to help defeat the Sandersons again, we don’t know.
In the trailer, we also see a black cat. Now, while we wish it was Binx, we know that when the Sandersons died in 1993, his curse was broken and he was reunited with his sister Emily in the afterlife. So, it can’t be him, but we assume this cat is just as important.
Whether Max, Dani, or Allison will be making an appearance is definitely under wraps, but we hope we get a nod to them somehow. After all, they paved the road for Becca, Izzy, and Cassie.
The Goal is Pretty Much the Same
Just like in the original, Becca, Izzy, and Cassie accidentally bring the Sanderson sisters back from the dead. Now, they have to defeat them before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve to save the children of Salem.
I guess the only question we have is if this happened 29 years ago, why aren’t the grownups more concerned? Sure, they didn’t believe Max when it happened in ‘93, but now they should believe that the witches are back again! Anyway, we digress.
Because the movie won’t be released until September 30, and this is just the first teaser trailer, we don’t know much. But no matter how much we do or don't know, one thing’s for sure: we can’t wait to watch this movie this Halloween season.
