A Recap of Reveals from D23

LucasFilm and Marvel and Disney Parks, Oh My!


D23 is the biggest Disney fan convention in the world. Held at the Anaheim Convention Center from September 9-11, 2022, it was a weekend full of cosplays, panels, and reveals for days.


So here is a comprehensive guide to the announcements from the 2022 D23 convention that were shared on the Disney Instagram account and official Disney Parks Blog.

Movies

  • A new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2 dropped featuring Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) as a glam witch teaching the young Sanderson sisters. The movie can be streamed on Disney+ on September 30, 2022.

  • Under Wraps 2, the sequel to the ‘90s DCOM, Under Wraps, will premiere on Disney Channel on September 25, 2022.

  • Mickey: The Story of a Mouse, a documentary about the big cheese will stream on November 18, 2022, on Disney+.

  • The first trailer for Disenchanted, the sequel to 2011’s Enchanted, was revealed where fairytales continue to merge with the real world, and Giselle (Amy Adams) turns into a wicked stepmother. The film can be streamed on Disney+ on November 24, 2022.

  • A teen comedy/romance called Prom Pact will launch in spring 2023.

  • Peter Pan & Wendy, starring Jude Law as Captain Hook, got a release date of 2023.

  • The trailer for the animated film Strange World was released to attendees along with a premiere date of November 23, 2022. It will feature a family of explorers, led by Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal), that journey into uncharted territory.

  • A new movie called Wish was revealed with a fall 2023 release date. It’s a fantasy movie that takes place in the Kingdom of Wishes where all wishes come true. The film will star Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Alan Tudyk (Encanto) and feature a soundtrack composed by Grammy-nominated artist, Julia Michaels. The audience at D23 got to listen to the very first song, “More for Us,” performed by DeBose.

  • The trailer for American Born Chinese, based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, will be released in 2023. It discusses identity through the lens of adolescence.

  • TRON Lightcycle Run will ~finally~ open in spring 2023.

  • The Hatbox Ghost will enter Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion in 2023.

  • A Figment meet-and-greet will launch by the end of 2023.

  • Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, will open in late 2023.

  • A new nighttime spectacular will debut on the World Showcase Lagoon in Epcot in late 2023.

  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will open in both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort in late 2024 with a new mist element, and the original cast of the movie will lend their voices to the attraction. This includes Anika Noni Rose (Tiana), Bruno Campos (Naveen), Michael Leon Wooley (Louis), and Jenifer Lewis (Mama Odie).

  • “Happily Ever After” will play during a new nighttime spectacular over Cinderella Castle in 2023.

  • There was an announcement to retheme Dinoland U.S.A. in Disney's Animal Kingdom to Moana and Zootopia, but nothing other than concept art was revealed in terms of plans.

  • While more of a concept reveal, and definitely a few years away from breaking ground, new areas were pitched for beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. The possible land(s) would include Coco, Encanto, and Disney Villains.

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever releases on November 11, 2022. Angela Bassett (Ramonda), Winston Duke (M'Baku), and Letitia Wright (Shuri) showed a new scene to attendees and prefaced that they hope the late Chadwick Boseman is proud of what they did with the film.

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will premiere on February 17, 2023. Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), and Johnathan Majors (Kang the Conquerer) presented new footage to the audience.

  • Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani (Miss Marvel), and Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) previewed a scene from The Marvels, which will debut on July 28, 2023.

  • Along with a new logo for Captain America: New World Order, two new cast members were announced: Shira Haas and Tim Blake Nelson. Anthony Mackie (Captain America) was joined by Danny Ramiez (Joaquin Torres), Carl Lumbly (Isaiah Bradley), and Tim Blacke Nelson (Samuel Sterns) on stage to discuss the film that will be released on May 3, 2024.

  • A new Fantastic Four film was confirmed to be directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and will be released on November 8, 2024.

  • The Thunderbolts, Marvel’s version of the anti-hero Suicide Squad saw numerous casting reveals including Black Widow’s Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and The Red Guardian (David Harbour), and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The film will close out Phase 5 of the MCU on July 26, 2024.

  • A trailer for Indiana Jones 5, to be released on June 30, 2023, was shown to the audience with Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) on stage. Backstage, Ford reunited with his Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star, Ke Huy Quan, who was there for the Loki panel.

  • A new film called Elemental, directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur), was announced and described by Games Radar as a cross between Zootopia and Inside Out. It stars Ember and Wade, voiced by Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, as fire and water. It will be released in theaters on June 16, 2023.

  • Adrian Molina’s (Coco) film Elio was revealed. Elio is a creative, 11-year-old “INdoorsman,” voiced by Yonas Kibreab who struggles to fit in. He accidentally gets beamed into space and mistaken for an ambassador from Earth. It will be released in the spring of 2024.

  • A surprise sequel, Inside Out 2, was confirmed for summer 2024 with Amy Poehler returning as Joy.

  • Avatar: The Way of Water, will premiere on December 16, 2022.

  • A prequel to the live-action Lion King was announced called Mufasa: The Lion King, to be released in 2024.

  • A new trailer starring Halle Bailey (Grown-ish) in the new live-action The Little Mermaid was revealed, with a release date of May 26, 2023.
