A Definitive Ranking of the Best High School Musical Songs Ever

Updated: Jan 20, 2022

Let’s be honest, they’re all bops.

The High School Musical franchise probably has the best music in Disney Channel history. Every movie, and now the series, has at least one song that you can’t get out of your head. To give you a reminder of the greatest hits from the 2000s, we’ve compiled a list of the best High School Musical songs of all time.

This song has the best one liners probably in the whole movie. “A saw?” “Is that even legal?” And, of course, Sharpay’s monologue. I mean the message of the song is… well it’s not great. But were we really listening to the message or just popping and locking and jamming and breaking to the beat?

Quite honestly, any Sharpay and Ryan song is top tier. Was there uncomfortable brother-sister chemistry? Maybe. But dang they could put on a show.

Are we sure Sharpay was the villain of these movies? Because she got the best songs. Sharpay was the queen of name dropping before Alexis Rose came along to steal that title. Now give her her pink Prada tote!

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the best baseball scene in cinematic history. How (and more importantly why) did Chad and Ryan switch clothes? I’m not sure, but I think we all need to thank Kenny Ortega for putting Corbin Bleu in those baseball pants.

If Sharpay got the best songs, Troy got the best angsty teenage solos. For someone who hated singing until he grabbed a karaoke mic, he sure does work out a lot of his problems through song.

Please see “Bop to the Top” above. Sharpay and Ryan are the best duo, change my mind. Plus they had Oprah calling… again!?

Yes, it’s a song about prom. The most important night of your life, didn’t you know? No matter what, this song always makes me want to dance.

This one is just Chad and Troy bro-ing out, but I’m not mad about it. You can tell that by HSM3 the boys found their voices and it makes the songs that much better.

Ah, yes the original song where Olivia Rodrigo had us screaming about our exes. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS) is deep you guys.

If there’s one thing I love about HSMTMTS, and I love a lot of things, it’s the girl bosses. This song had everyone jamming along. And the outfits? WOW.

Bonus Round:

This is probably the most iconic song in HSM history. It’s the one we all learned the dance to for quite literally no reason. But if it were to play right now you would still remember it.

This one is for the real fans who stuck around in High School Musical 2.

This makes the honorary mention list because this song and dance literally rip off Michael Jackson’s song, coincidentally, called “Scream.” Kenny Ortega, I know you directed MJ’s “This Is It” documentary, but I don’t think this is it.

“The Climb” performed by Joe Serafini

This song really deserved Miley Cyrus’ retweet. A gorgeous take on a song that we all loved growing up. Want to hear more about Joe Serafini? Check out our interview with him.

What can I say, Olivia Rodrigo’s new album is on repeat all day every day and she was a HSM girl once. You know we all stanned Vanessa Hudgens’ “Sneakernight” this hard too.
