What To Know Before Watching ‘Captain America: Brave New World’

Get caught up before February 14.

The Cap is back! The new Captain America that is. After taking on the role in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sam (a.k.a Captain America) is enlisted to help rebuild the Avengers in the newest movie in the Marvel universe Captain America: Brave New World.

Before the new film hits theaters, here’s everything we know about the movie, who’s in it, and what it’s about.

When Does Captain America: Brave New World Come Out?

Captain America: Brave New World is premiering in theaters on February 14.

What Is Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World is the fourth movie in the Captain America series and the first film in the franchise to star Anthony Mackie as the hero.

What Is Captain America: Brave New World About?

Per usual, Marvel is being tight-lipped about the new movie, but from the trailers, we know that Captain America: Brave New World will follow Sam as he works with newly elected president Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) to help rebuild the Avengers. However, the new Captain America finds himself involved in something much more serious as the president’s inner circle is compromised and the world is on the brink of war.

Who’s the Villain in Captain America: Brave New World

While we know Thaddeus Ross becomes the Red Hulk, that doesn’t necessarily make him the villain in Captain America: Brave New World — at least not the main villain. It could be that, much like Bruce Banner’s Hulk, Ross can’t control the “other guy” and is on a path of destruction.

The true, believed villain of Captain America: Brave New World is Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito) who is a notorious enemy of Captain America in the comics. What his role will look like in Captain America: Brave New World — beyond the obvious gun-wielding in the trailers — remains to be seen.

When Does Captain America: Brave New World Take Place?

It’s still unclear exactly when Captain America: Brave New World takes place. While we do know it occurs after The Blip and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier since Sam has fully embraced his role as Captain America, we aren’t sure what year it’s set. That’s because Ross is the new president; however, the last MCU president we knew of was President Ritson (Dermot Mulroney) during Disney+’s series Secret Invasion. Mulroney is not credited on IMDb as being a part of the new Captain America movie, so it’s unknown how far after his presidency the film takes place — or, if his presidency was cut short for some reason.

Is Bucky Barnes in Captain America: Brave New World

Even though Captain America: Brave New World is set after the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, it does not seem like Sam’s friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) will make an appearance in the new movie. However, Bucky will be back for the new Thunderbolts movie, hitting theaters on May 2.

Is Steve Rogers in Captain America: Brave New World

Sam is constantly reminded that he’s not Steve Rogers — but will the OG Cap, played by Chris Evans, make an appearance? It’s unlikely considering that Rogers gave up his role as Captain America when he chose to go back in time and be with Peggy Carter during Avengers: Endgame. Our best guess is you’ll see some Captain America flashbacks, but no new scenes with America’s Ass itself.

What To Watch Before Captain America: Brave New World

To be fully up-to-date before seeing Captain America: Brave New World, you won’t have to watch the entire Marvel gauntlet, however, refreshing yourself on the Captain America movies won’t hurt. For sure, you’ll want to watch Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame to understand how Sam traded in his role of The Falcon for Captain America — as well as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier for a glimpse into his life after Steve Rogers.
